SUV driven by mother strikes, kills 5-year-old son

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — A 5-year-old Detroit-area boy has been struck and killed after running in front of a vehicle driven by his mother.

The Oakland County sheriff’s office says Thursday that the boy suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon at an area hospital.

The sheriff’s office says it appears the boy tripped in the roadway and was struck.

His 25-year-old mother told investigators her son was playing in the front yard as she was leaving their Pontiac home, northwest of Detroit.

The woman said she heard the boy call, but didn’t see him run toward the SUV she was driving.
