Michiana Family YMCA announces MRSA scare after recently opening

(Photo supplied/YMCA)

It’s not the opening a local YMCA wanted.

The newly-opened Michiana Family YMCA is alerting the public that a staff member and a child attending the Child Watch service have contracted Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, according to the South Bend Tribune.

It’s unclear if the staph bacteria at the root of the infections was contracted at a YMCA location, but the facility is following all procedures for disinfection.

Signs have been posted at both locations in Mishawaka and South Bend that recommend any child with fresh, open sores not participate in Child Watch and for everyone to keep open sores covered.
