Construction is finally about to get underway on the new building for the Humane Society of Elkhart County in Bristol.
A groundbreaking ceremony will finally be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Humane Society headquarters on County Road 19, according to our reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth.
The facility has been in the works since 2014. It’s being built on a vacant area of the Humane Society’s property, is expected to be finished in summer or fall of 2017, according to The Elkhart Truth.
Some fundraising for the project still needs to be finished. Humane society boosters have secured 93% of the $4.5 million needed from the Community Foundation of Elkhart County and other resources. The Humane Society secured 80% of the overall goal of $5.2 million, which also includes costs for furnishings and equipment.
When the new facility is completed, the existing one will be torn down.
