Body cams finally equipped for Elkhart Police Department officers

Sgt. Chris Snyder shows off a body cam (Sam Householder/Elkhart Truth)

The Elkhart police force is finally 100% equipped with body cams.

An officer was equipped with the last body cam just “in the last few days”, Mayor Tim Neese told our reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth.

Technical issues have marred the launch of body cams within the department. As the issues have been resolved over the last six months, more officers have been getting equipped with them.

All officers, including K-9s, that interact with the public will use them going forward. The cameras are located on the front of the officer, as pictured with this story.

Approval for the body cameras came in May 2015 following unrest over recent police shootings. However, the cameras didn’t actually arrive until December. Technical issues marred their full deployment until this month.

Video will be stored and the public will have access to them if there’s a legitimate reason. Video will can be used in criminal cases and officer training.
