A Warsaw man was arrested on a preliminary murder charge in the death of a 2 year-old girl.

29 year-old Christopher Grimmett was taken into custody after police found the child’s body buried in a shallow grave at the home of Grimmett’s brother on Thursday, Nov. 10.

The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department believes the girl’s death stems from a child custody dispute, according to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at The Elkhart Truth.

Officers responded to a call of a custody complaint in Warsaw around 10:25 p.m. and Grimmett told them he was babysitting his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter, Adalin Stamper, earlier in the day until the child’s grandmother had picked her up, The Elkhart Truth reported.

When police followed up on the story they discovered that he had taken the girl to his brother’s residence, The Elkhart Truth reported.

The brother and his wife consented for a search of the property.

During the search, police found a shallow grave in the backyard.

Stamper was inside the grave.

Police say Grimmett provided a statement that eventually led to his arrest. He is being held in Kosciusko County Jail, The Elkhart Truth reported.

Stamper died from multiple blunt force trauma injuries, according to autopsy results from the Kosciusko County Coroner.
