A big employer in southwest Michigan is going to shut it’s doors in 2018.

600 jobs will permanently disappear in 2018 in Van Buren County when the lights go out at the Palisades Power Plant. The Covert Township facility will shut down on Oct. 1, 2018, according to a release from operator Entergy Corporation.

Entergy called the shutdown “a more prudent” decision when compared to the business risks of remaining open.

The troubled Palisades Plant has seen its share of problems in recent years, and has been involved in numerous temporary shut downs. At one point it was named one of the worst-performing nuclear facilities in the country.

The plant went online in 1971.
