Elkhart Community Schools moving back start date of next school year

(Sam Householder/Elkhart Truth)

Elkhart Community Schools are making the move back to a more traditional calendar year, and beginning next year, school will start in mid-August.

This school year began Aug. 4 and will end on May 26. Next year’s dates will run from Aug. 17 to June 6, according to the Elkhart Truth.

The move to an earlier schedule two years ago had a number of critics, who felt the school year began too early. A proposal to return to a more traditional calendar had a preliminary review by the Elkhart Community Schools Board of School Trustees on Tuesday. It still faces final approval, but none of the board members raised any issues with it.

The district took two surveys of parents, staff, students and others in the community to craft the proposed 2017-2018 calendar, crafted by a special committee.
