It just wasn’t meant to be.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg will not be seeking the Democratic National Committee chairman position, or any position with the DNC for that matter, according to an op-ed he published on Medium.com.

Earlier this week, Politico had identified Buttigieg as a potential candidate for the top post in the DNC, quoting a top Democrat in the process. Buttigieg himself at the time didn’t exactly deny he was considering running for the position.

In the Medium.com article, he did take aim at President-elect Donald Trump.

“The Democratic Party matters more than ever, now that a hostile takeover of the Republican Party has brought to power a thin-skinned authoritarian who is not liberal, nor conservative, nor moderate. Yet the party today stands at its lowest point of national and statewide influence since the 1920, just when a robust opposition is needed most.”

He also has expressed hope that the Democratic Party sees “a true turnaround” like he feels South Bend has done during his tenure. He also reiterated that the turnaround starts at the local level.
