South Bend Police respond to dozens of calls about New Year’s celebratory gunfire

Days before the holiday weekend, the South Bend Police Department issued a warning, advising residents not to shoot guns in the air to celebrate the new year.

Officers of the South Bend Police Department responded to approximately 70 calls of shots having been fired during the time frame of 11 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 4 a.m. on Jan. 1, according to South Bend Police Lt. Gene Eyster.

None of the calls of service resulted in any injuries, said Eyster.

Though the number may seem high, given the five hour period, it is a reduction in the number of gunshot reports from previous years, Eyster stated.
