8-year-old boy drives minivan into tree in South Bend

An 8-year-old boy took the family minivan for a spin before crashing it.

That’s according to South Bend police, who say that the incident happened around 12:45 a.m. Monday morning on Lincoln Way West at Wilber St., according to ABC 57.

It doesn’t appear that child was injured and police spoke with both the child and the parents at the scene.

The child drove the van off the road on Lincoln Way and into a tree. Airbags were deployed. The boy was apparently trying to drive to a family member’s house, according to police.

Police believe that this crash could have been a lot worse during a different time of day, when more traffic is out on the roadways.
