A redevelopment project for South Bend’s East bank has hit another snag.
The Area Board of Zoning Appeals has denied a developer’s petition for a height variance Wednesday, according to the South Bend Tribune.
That variance would have allowed Matthews LLC to build a nine-story apartment building and Martin’s grocery store. Right now, buildings in the East Bank area can’t be built taller than five stories, according to a city ordinance.
The building would include a Martin’s grocery store, a pharmacy and a deli. The project is on a deadline, because it uses Regional Cities money, and needs to be done in the next few years.

I am sure the zoning can be changed for the right amount of money…That is always what it is about right? It doesn’t have anything to do with actual problems that may arise with a 9 story building. It was only a problem when it was 12 stories. All will work out for a fee. I’m thinking a million per story ought to do it! Wow, we might be able to build another “Roundy” somewhere for that kind of money. Hooray for us in South Bend.
