South Bend man gets 30+ year sentence for kidnapping, extortion

A South Bend man has been sentenced to more than 50 years in prison after being convicted of kidnapping and extortion.

Federal prosecutors say Derek Fields, 30, and his co-defendants kidnapped a man against his will and demanded a ransom from his family.

During the abduction, the victim was shot and suffered permanent injuries.

The to co-defendants, Lindani Mzembe and Ivan Brazier were also convicted in separate trials.

Fields is also ordered to pay nearly $200,000 for the victim’s lost wages and medical expenses.
