South Bend man arrested after firing gun, leading police on chase in Elkhart

A South Bend man is in the Elkhart County Jail after sheriff’s investigators say he shot a gun out his vehicle window and led police on a short chase.

It happened around 12:50 a.m. on Sunday, March 12.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle in the area of Lusher and Main Streets, according to a news release from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver, Preston Johnson III, 23, took off, the news release stated.

The pursuit only lasted for a few minutes and traveled through the areas of Hively and Burr Oak, Harold, and Dinehart Streets before Johnson got out of the vehicle and tried to run off on foot, the news release stated.

Johnson was arrested on preliminary charges of resisting arrest, criminal recklessness, operating whil intoxicated and leaving the scene of a crash.
