Man shot on West Franklin Street in Elkhart

A man is recovering after being shot in Elkhart.

It was just after 5 p.m. on Friday, March 24, when officers heard sounds of gunfire coming from the area of the 700 block of West Marion Street or West Franklin Street, according to a news release from the Elkhart Police Department.

As officers arrived in the area, they were advised 911 callers heard the sounds of gunfire coming from the back of a home.

Officers arrived and located the gunshot victim, a 27 year old man, in the front yard of a home on West Franklin Street.

The victim was taken to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening gunshot to his leg.

The victim told police he was outside his residence when he had a brief conversation with the suspect. During their brief conversation words were exchanged which lead to the victim pushing the suspect then running.

While the victim was running he heard sounds of gunfire and felt pain in his leg, causing him to fall.

Officers located several shell casings and two slugs at the scene.

Two homes on West Franklin Street sustained damage as a result of the gunfire.

The suspect was described as a black male, according to police.
