HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) — A former northwestern Indiana township trustee and her son have agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy and fraud charges.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports former Calumet Township Trustee Mary Elgin and Steven Hunter were scheduled for trial on Monday. Hunter had led the township’s information systems and technology office.

Federal prosecutors charged them and two others in 2014.

Elgin admits in a written plea agreement she extorted money and work from township employees for her re-election and political efforts. Hunter says he distributed Elgin’s fundraising tickets that employees had to sell or pay for from their own pockets.

Elgin also has agreed to plead guilty to failing to pay income taxes for 2013.

Government attorneys say they will oppose any sentence without prison time.
