Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb signs bill closing cold beer sales loophole

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb has signed into law legislation closing the legal loophole used by the Ricker’s convenience store chain to sell cold beer.

He said in a statement Tuesday that he signs the measure with an understanding that the state’s alcohol laws need review and “common-sense changes.”

Convenience stores in Indiana are allowed to sell warm beer and cold wine, but not cold beer. Jay Ricker, head of the chain, had obtained permits allowing cold beer sales at two locations after installing seating and serving made-to-order food.

The bill lawmakers passed this session requires that 60 percent of alcohol sales be for on-site drinking in order for permits to be renewed.

It exempts fraternal clubs, golf courses and marinas, among other businesses. It does not exempt Ricker’s.

What a ridiculous thing to waste money on. Common sense change would be to get rid of the Sunday sales restrictions altogether.

So glad they found time for garbage like this. And how quickly they acted on it. Glad to see here in Indiana we have our priorities straight.?

They can move at light speed to raise gas taxes, auto registration fees and the outlawing of cold beer sales at convenience stores but no so fast on things that are important like rooting out waste and corruption in the State budget, way to go dumb@sses.

I like warm beer anyway May 3, 2017 at 12:46 pm

Its all about keeping the lobbyist (shhhhhhhhh) happy and their pockets lined. Why is the temperature of beer at the time of sale in a law in the first place? A group of businesses pay a lobbyist to pay politicians to get a law to give themselves a monopoly. Don’t you just love how Democrat Holcomb passes this stupid legislation but says in so many words that it is stupid and common sense needs to be applied! Why not apply it now you jack#$%! Everyone needs to buy their beer anywhere that by law it can only be sold warm. That would make their bull@#$% law meaningless.
