Indiana State Police officers got more than they bargained for when they pulled over a Trail Creek man for blowing a stop sign at around midnight Tuesday morning.

Officers pulled over 26-year-old Ryan Thomas near the intersection of Woodland and Cherry Streets in Michigan City. However, Thomas got out of the vehicle and led police on a brief foot pursuit near Dewey Street, according to police.

After the pursuit, an Indiana State Police officer went back to the vehicle and found a black Glock 9mm handgun on the floorboard and a baggie containing what’s believed to be marijuana. Thomas and two passengers who remained in the vehicle during the pursuit denied knowledge of the items.

Thomas was arrested and booked into LaPorte County Jail, where officers then discovered a large amount of cash in Thomas’ possession. The passengers were allowed to leave.

Thomas has been charged with being a felon in possession of firearm, a Level 5 Felony; Dealing in marijuana (prior), a Level 6 Felony; Possession of marijuana (prior), a Level 6 Felony; Battery on Law Enforcement, a Level 6 Felony; Resisting Law Enforcement: a Class A Misdemeanor; and having a handgun with no permit, which is also a Class A Misdemeanor.
