Property taxes to go up for some St. Joseph County residents

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Some Indiana officials are hoping to combat state-mandated property tax caps by increasing property tax rates.

The South Bend Tribune reports the St. Joseph County Council and Board of Commissioners will consider approving rate increases next month. The proposals would increase funds available for buying police cars, computers, building repairs, and bridge maintenance and repairs.

A 2008 state law called the “Circuit Breaker” caps property taxes paid by homeowners and businesses. Rate increases would only affect property owners whose taxes haven’t reached the maximum rate allowed by the law.

County budget consultant Steve Dalton says many homeowners in South Bend and Mishawaka wouldn’t see increases because they already pay the cap.

Council member Jamie O’Brien says the city should make budget cuts instead of raising tax rates.

Because they just haven’t got enough of your money to spend! Live withing a budget? Why would they want to do that when there are still some people working and paying for their fun.

You think you own your land peasants? Try not paying those property taxes and see how long the government lets you stay there. Now pay up to your betters! They’ve got plans for your money.
