A Gobles man is dead after being thrown from and being hit by his own jet ski.

28-year-old Derek Jackson was thrown from his jet ski on Magician Lake at about 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Witnesses told Cass County deputies that Jackson had hit a wave and was thrown from his jet ski. That same jet ski then hit Jackson. He was airlifted by Medflight to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where he later died.

The St. Joseph County Coroner’s Office determined that Jackson died due to drowning. This despite wearing a floatation device and alcohol not being a factor.
