Mishawaka KMart closing for good on September 3

(Jon Zimney/95.3 MNC)

The end of an era in Michiana is approaching on Labor Day weekend.

That’s because the South Bend Tribune is reporting that the Mishawaka KMart is slated to close on September 3. It’s in the process of liquidating its remaining store items.

The Mishawaka KMart, located at the intersection of McKinley Avenue and Grape Road, is the last KMart in Michiana. The first KMart was located on South Michigan Street near Ireland Road and opened in 1964. Other locations open and closed on Western Avenue in South Bend, Niles, Elkhart, Plymouth, and LaPorte. The Mishawaka store is the last area store to close.

The Mishawaka location has been open since 1966. The South Bend Tribune reports that traffic was so heavy for opening day, that police were called to direct traffic to and from the store’s 1,000 parking spots.
