No cause of death yet for St. Joseph County jail inmate found dead Friday

It’s not known yet exactly why a South Bend man died Friday while incarcerated at St. Joseph County jail.

43-year-old Christopher Kleinrichert was found unconscious in his cell at about 4:15 p.m. as dinner was being served. He had the cell to himself and was last seen alive at about 3:50 p.m. during a routine medical pass by correctional officers and a nurse.

Despite CPR by medical staff at the prison, then more live-saving measures by South Bend fire personnel, Kleinrichert was unable to be revived and pronounced dead at the prison.

Results from an autopsy performed in Fort Wayne didn’t indicate physical trauma. However, a cause of death won’t be determined until toxicology reports come back.

Kleinrichert was charged in June with felony intimidation, along with a charge of obstructing traffic.
