Andrews University students sticking with plan to visit Puerto Rico

BERRIEN SPRINGS, Mich. (AP) — Architecture students from a college in southwestern Michigan are sticking to their plan to visit Puerto Rico.

More than a dozen students from Andrews University in Berrien Springs have been involved in a project to design new housing and public spaces in a flood-prone San Juan neighborhood. They’ll still carry out their plans this week, but they’ll also bring tools, cleaning supplies, baby formula, tarps and other necessities for victims of Hurricane Maria.

United Airlines has waived extra baggage fees. The students will be in Puerto Rico from Sunday to Thursday.

Professor Andrew von Maur tells the South Bend Tribune the trip will be a “reality check.” Two students in the group are from Puerto Rico.
