Five people from Hammond were injured Sunday night in a crash in LaPorte County that involved a semi and an SUV.

The crash happened just west of LaPorte and in front of the LaPorte County Fairgrounds on State Road 2 and 18th Street at about 7 p.m. Sunday.

LaPorte County officers say an SUV that had stopped in the intersection pulled in front of a semi and was hit. The driver of the SUV told police she pulled out because she thought the semi had to stop at the intersection.

A 16-year-old was ejected from the vehicle. He, along with an 8-year-old girl, had to be flown to an area hospital. The driver and two others were taken to LaPorte Hospital for treatment of significant injuries.
