SWAT responded to a standoff in LaPorte Wednesday that ended with the gunman taking his own life.

LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department SWAT officers responded to the call at a home in the 900 block of Indiana Avenue.

A suicidal gunman had barricaded himself inside the residence shortly after 1:30 p.m. CST Wednesday.

After six and half hours, the man took his own life. The situation caused a closure of U.S. 35 for much of the afternoon and evening, and police said that the public were never in danger.
