One street in South Bend’s Carriage Hills community greeted the New Year with a messy flood, thanks to a car that struck a fire hydrant.

It happened on Tally Ho Drive Sunday evening, and no one was injured in the crash.

However, WNDU reports that gallons of water poured into the frozen street, creating icy conditions and flooding. Inside a nearby home a family was preparing to ring in the New Year and had to deal with water that invaded their garage from the street.

The South Bend Utilities department says there were roughly ten water main breaks during the holiday season, which kept crews very busy. One water main break shut down Ironwood Road south of Ireland Road last week for a time.
