Inmate found dead in cell at St. Joseph County Jail

An inmate was found dead in a medical cell at the St. Joseph County Jail.

The inmate was discovered unconscious in the cell around 1:40 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, during a routine check, according to the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office.

The inmate was housed alone in the medical cell.

A correctional officer was unable to get a response from the inmate and entered the cell to investigate.

Upon recognizing the inmate was unconscious, the officer called for help from in-house
medical staff who began CPR. Medics were also called to the scene to help, the sheriff’s department reported.

None of the efforts by either jail medical staff or the medics were able to revive the inmate.

The  St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit was called to handle the investigation into this matter as they do for all in-custody deaths within the Jail, according to the sheriff’s department.
