The Mishawaka Police Department is warning residents of scam involving people calling requesting money over the phone.

Police say they’ve received as many as five recent complaints since March 7.

The most common scams involve an IRS bill, a relative in jail or injured while in another country, according to a news release from Mishawaka Police.

They say the caller may talk with you or leave a number for you to call back. They say some of the phone numbers are internet generated phone number that could be the same as your phone number. The caller is told to leave a message then receives a call later from the scammer directing them to call another number and told they can send money “to keep quiet”, the news release stated.

Anyone calling requesting money over the phone for any reason, IRS bill, relative in jail in another country, federal warrant, should presumed to be a scam.
