Elkhart police say credit card skimmers are back on the rise

(Photo supplied/Goshen Police Department)

Elkhart police are warning you about a recent rash of “skimming” taking place at credit card terminals like ATMs.

Skimmers are card readers placed on real terminals to steal credit or debit card information when a card is swiped. Sometimes, a camera is placed nearby to catch pin numbers.

Elkhart police suggest you:

  1. Look for signs of tampering
  2. Pull on the card reader and keypad to make sure there’s not a skimmer in place
  3. Cover the keypad when you enter a pin
  4. Avoid stand-alone ATMs
  5. Frequently check your bank and credit card accounts
