Former Notre Dame football player Kona Schwenke dies at age 25

Sad news Sunday evening out of Laie, Hawaii.

Former Notre Dame Defensive Lineman Kona Schwenke died in his hometown at the age of 25.

He was part of Coach Brian Kelly’s first recruiting class in 2010, and played for the team through the 2013 season, including the National Championship game in 2012. Schwenke also appeared on the practice squad rosters for five NFL teams in 2014 and 2015.

“We will tell the stories of how things were different with you,” former ND wide receiver and fellow Hawaii product Robby Toma posted in his Instagram account, Sunday. “I love you my brother. Thank you for everything over the years.

“I am grateful for the time we got to spend with you on earth. My heart hurts, but I know the memories we have will last a lifetime. Look over us, my USO. My prayers are with my Schwenke Family. #RIPuso”

The South Bend Tribune reports has more reactions from former teammates of Schwenke. Details on how he died have not been released.
