Nine people are recovering after a driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel and crashed on I-94 near Michigan City.

It happened at about 3 a.m. Sunday about three miles east of the Michigan City exit. A 31-year-old South Bend woman was driving an SUV eastbound and Indiana State Police say she fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle went off the road, down an embankment, flipped, hit a tree, then went into a water-filled culvert and landed on its roof.

The driver ended up at Memorial Hospital in South Bend with leg and respiratory issues. A 23-year-old Chicago woman riding in the front seat was treated at Franciscan Hospital in Michigan City for head and facial trauma.

The driver’s two children, a three-year-old girl and one-year-old boy, eventually wound up at Comer’s Children Hospital in Chicago with non-life threatening injuries.

The passenger’s children – twin three-month-old girls, twin five-year-old boys, and an eight-year-old girl, were also injured. All were sent to Francisan Hospital, though the three-month-old girls ended up at Comer’s Children’s Hospital. All had non-life threatening injuries.
