A South Bend Police officer was involved in a crash late Thursday night.

It happened just after 11 p.m. at State Road 23 and 30th Street.

The officer, identified by police as Sergeant Jamil Elwaer, was travelling eastbound when his vehicle was hit by a Jeep being driven by a South Bend man that was trying to make a turn onto 30th Street. Because his vehicle was hit on the driver’s side, police say Elwear was able to crawl out of his vehicle on the passenger’s side with assistance.

Police say he suffered several injuries, including some broken bones. He remains in the hospital.

The other driver refused treatment. No word on any charges.
