Eddy Street Commons developers get approval to shut down street at night

Eddy Street Commons (Spencer Marsh/95.3 MNC)

A real estate investment firm now has the power to shut down a portion of Eddy Street near Notre Dame during the overnight hours on the weekends.

The district’s developers, Kite Realty Group, got the OK from the South Bend Board of Public Safety this week to close Eddy Street from Angela Boulevard to Napoleon Street from 12:30 to 4 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays on an as-needed basis.

The South Bend Tribune reports off-duty police officers working security will conduct the closures.

In addition to large crowds at night, there have been a growing number of criminal incidents at Eddy Street Commons in recent years. For instance, officers have been called to Brothers Bar & Grill 29 times this year and 26 times to Five Guys Burger and Fries.
