Victim of Tuesday morning fire in South Bend identified

(Abby Lutz/ABC 57)

The South Bend Fire Department is continuing to investigate a deadly fire that claimed the life of an adult man.

Officers had initially said it was a boy who died in the blaze on Bonfield Place around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Fire chief Stephen Cox explained in a Tuesday that, by the time firefighters arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames. Two adults in the basement had to squeeze through a small basement window to get out because of the fire on the first floor.

The adult man who died, 23-year-old Shawki Henderson, was pulled out of the house by two firefighters, who suffered minor injuries. They returned to duty shortly afterward, but Henderson died at a hospital hours later.

Cox says is appears there were no working smoke detectors in the house.
