The owner of the South Bend Cubs and Four Winds Field is giving back to his alma mater.

Andrew Berlin donated $1 million to Syracuse University to help support scholarships and financial assistance for students who want to go into a career of sports analytics.

The funds will help boost faculty research, sport analytical competitions, mentorship program and other programs.

Berlin, who also is a part owner with the Chicago Cubs, graduated from Syracuse in 1983 with a political science degree. He also sits on Syracuse’s Board of Trustees.

As part of the donation, an annual symposium for people interested in sports analytics has been established, with the first one occurring in Berlin’s home city of Chicago.
