SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Plans call for using a $3.7 million bond issue to help make improvements at the Potawatomi Zoo in northern Indiana.

The zoo in South Bend is planning to revamp its entryway and make other improvements to start. The South Bend Tribune reports it’s the first phase of the zoo’s master plan, which was rolled out in 2015 to help increase attendance by adding new buildings and animal exhibits.

Groundbreaking is Sept. 12. The Potawatomi Zoological Society runs the city-owned zoo.

A $1.5 million portion of the money will go toward the $3 million revamping of the zoo’s entrance, adding a new building, doubling the size of education space and creating a new gift shop.

The zoo will use $2.2 million to address a number of deferred maintenance needs.
