SBPD investigating Wednesday morning armed robbery, shots fired

One person was injured in an armed robbery Wednesday morning.

It happened in the 200 block of East Ewing Street, just south of Riley High School near the Studebaker Golf Club. The scene was originally described as a shooting incident, but police say it was actually an armed robbery that involved the victim being pistol-whipped. Shots were fired, however, according to police.

South Bend Police released the following information about the incident:

South Bend Police are investigating an armed robbery and shots fired that took place in the 200 block of E. Ewing early Wednesday morning.

Officers were sent to the address around 6 a.m. after getting a call from a hospital in Dowagiac, Michigan that a male was there with injuries from an incident that took place in South Bend.

Officers learned around 2:30 a.m., two unknown males entered the building and struck the victim before taking items and leaving. The victim received a ride to Dowagiac for treatment.

Officers then learned around 3:30 a.m., gunshots were heard in the area and the same building where the robbery occurred had been hit by gunfire. No one reported hearing the gunshots at the time.

When officers arrived to the 200 block of E. Ewing, they searched the building and found four people inside including three children between the ages of one and four. No one was injured.

There is no description of a suspect or suspects at this time.

This case remains under investigation by detectives with the South Bend Investigative Bureau.
