9-year-old girl on bike struck by minivan near Middlebury

A girl on her bike was hit by a minivan in Elkhart County.

The collision happened on Tuesday, Sep. 18, on County Road 16, east of Middlebury.

The 9 year-old was riding eastbound when a 55 year-old Middlebury man came up behind her and struck her with his vehicle, according to police.

The girl was airlifted to Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries and trauma all over her body, including a significant head injury.

The driver told police he never saw the girl.

Police say the girl was not wearing a helmet.
