Authorities: Suspect dies after struggle during arrest

A suspect died in custody in Berrien Springs.

A Berrien Springs-Oronoko Township Police Officer responded to a malcious destruction of property call shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, on West Union Street.

51 year-old Jack Clement Lunneen was taken into custody in the parking lot of the Fifth Third Bank on Cass Street.

Lunneen resisted arrest and had to be physically restrained, according to a news release from Berrien Springs-Oronoko Township Police.

A short time later officers called for an ambulance after the suspect experienced medical difficulties. He was taken to Lakeland Hospital around 2:30 a.m.

The original officer and a Berrien County Sheriff’s deputy are on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation.
