There’s a special ceremony for the South Bend Fire Department at their memorial at Seitz Park.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8.

The department and their local union will perform a ceremony of rest and honors.

They are temporarily shutting down the memorial and storing it while construction gets underway at the park.

South Bend Fire Departments Honor and Color Guard Team will lower the flag and perform the resting ceremony for memorial which currently sits on point at the start of the East Race Waterway. Active and retired firefighters, the City of South Bend, Venues Parks and Arts, and several local companies contributed to the construction of this memorial and are greatly appreciated. The memorial will be removed and placed in storage as construction begins at Seitz Park.

The Firefighters Memorial was dedicated in 2004 to honor and never forget eight South Bend Firefighters who died in the line of duty while serving the City of South Bend. The daughter of the late Richard “Doc” Brekrus will be in attendance as honor is rendered during the service.

The following South Bend Firefighters answered their call on the Last Alarm; Edwin Martin, Stanislaw Duszynski, Camiel De Vleeschower, John Howard, August Horvath, Anthony Miller, Eugene Rozwarski and Richard Brekrus.

The service is open to the public with limited seats available.
