A fourth-grade student in the Middlebury Community Schools passed away Wednesday after contracting bacterial meningitis.

Abbigayle DiPietro was a student at Heritage Intermediate School.

A message sent home to parents from the superintendent of schools said they would not provide specific details out of respect to the Abbi and her family. They did, however, pass along word from the both the doctor who treated her and the Elkhart County Health Department that her illness was NOT contagious and that her circumstances were rare. No other students at the school were in any danger.

A fundraiser on Facebook for the family raised more than $10,000 in the first two days.
