Boy struck and killed on Lusher Avenue in Elkhart identified

An 8-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle and died in Elkhart.

The collision happened around 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, in the 1500 block of Lusher Avenue, according to the Elkhart Police Department.

Two juvenile males ran out into the roadway. The driver of a red Dodge Ram driving westbound on Lusher was unable to stop in time to avoid the crash with one of the boys.

Maurice Gray of Elkhart was taken to the hospital where he died.

Gray was a student at Hawthorne Elementary.

Elkhart Community Schools will have counseling services available to students and staff.

The collision remains under investigation.
