Illegal U-turn leads to semi collision, closure of bypass in South Bend

A car performing an illegal U-turn is believed to have caused a collision between two semi trucks that resulted in the closure of the U.S. 31 bypass.

The crash happened around 11 a.m. on Saturday, Mach 16 in the northbound lanes near the U.S. 20 exit.

It took rescue crews nearly an hour to extricate one of the drivers. He was taken to the hospital for broken bones.

The other semi driver also went to the hospital for minor injuries.

The bypass lanes reopened to traffic just before 6 p.m. on Saturday.
