A Mishawaka man is in custody after leading an Indiana State Trooper on a chase that ended in a muddy field.

The pursuit began around 1:40 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, when a state police trooper was at the intersection of Ironwood and Lincolnway East in South Bend and noticed a gray Ford pickup truck in front of him that had a registration violation, according to a news release from Indiana State Police.

The trooper attempted a stop, but the driver sped away, the news release stated.

When it appeared the Ford had become stuck in the mud, the state trooper entered the field to take the suspect driver into custody. The Ford was able to gain traction and continued southbound through the field but the state trooper was unable to follow.

A short time later, officers with the South Bend Police Department found the truckabandoned near Kern Road.

The state trooper began to track the driver of the Ford using his K9 partner, Nala, while a perimeter was set up by other officers as well as several Indiana State Police K9 units that had been training nearby. The driver of the Ford, identified as Clarence Jones, 50 of Mishawka, was soon spotted crossing a field on foot and taken into custody.

Jones was preliminary charged with Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle, Possession of a Legend Drug, Resisting Law Enforcement, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Recklessness, and Reckless Driving.
