A bill that would not allow Indiana residents convicted of crimes involving animal abuse to own a cat or a dog while on probation or parole was headed to Governor Holcomb’s desk on Thursday.

House members voted 90-0 Tuesday to send the bill to Holcomb, who is expected to sign it into law. The measure already passed through the Senate by a unanimous vote in February.

This legislation would bar anyone convicted of one of 13 animal abuse offenses from owning, harboring or training a dog or cat for the duration of their probation or parole. That includes convictions for animal fighting.

Several County Prosecutors have called for the legislation as an attempt to curtail repeated instances of animal abuse by people with a history of animal abuse.
