16-year-old South Bend boy struck, killed by train in Mishawaka

A pedestrian was killed after being hit by a train in Mishawaka. It happened around 8:20 a.m. on Thursday, May 2.

Mishawaka Police Officers were dispatched to the Norfolk Southern Rail Road Tracks between Byrkit and Merrifield.

Officers arrived on the scene finding the victim, who was struck by a westbound Amtrack train.

The victim, Gavin Chapman, 16, of South Bend, was pronounced dead on the scene.
