Billionaire starts ballot drive to cut Michigan car premiums

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Billionaire businessman Dan Gilbert is starting a ballot drive as a “failsafe” in case Michigan’s Republican-led Legislature and Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer don’t enact legislation to cut the country’s highest auto insurance premiums.

Quicken Loans vice president of government affairs Jared Fleisher said Monday that a ballot committee, Citizens for Lower Auto Insurance Rates, will be created this week.

If Gilbert’s group gathers enough voter signatures, the Legislature could approve the initiative and sidestep a veto. The House and Senate have passed differing bills that Whitmer has criticized, though negotiations are ongoing.

Fleisher says it’d be best if legislators and Whitmer enact a law to reduce rates by letting people opt out of mandatory unlimited medical benefits. But he says signature-gathering must begin soon as a backup.

Our state government tried to make a change during the last two terms of different representatives but the money from lobby groups of insurance and trauma centers or hospitals were too powerful for the people. How much money do you political parties need to do what is right?
I am selling my extra project vehicles and other things just to pay for insurance. It’s not just auto insurance. However, we just paid for 6 months of coverage $1,204. For two cars. Add a year of motorcycle $607. Add the two cars on storage of $140.
Michigan state elected officials, if you can’t get it done, we won’t vote for you again. no more excuses. we can’t afford to pay for insurance that you mandate. It’s no wonder that so many here no longer have any insurance. Also the reason why nobody wants to move here when they know how much money you force us to pay for nonsense like this and other things.
Indiana and other drivers that comes here – listen up to this. Our rules apply to you as well. No fault for us apply to you as well. If you are in an accident here and have only plpd, and it’s not your fault, you are not going to have help from anywhere.
No fault is no fault for all.
Our son had it happen to him 2 years ago memorial day weekend. Totalled his suv when a gent pulled out in front of him and ticketed for failure to yield right of way. Not our son’s fault, but it doesn’t matter the other driver was ticketed. Without full coverage our son was out and unable to do anything about it.
