In less than 10 hours a Winona Lake man allegedly set his home on fire, scaled Lakeview Middle School, fell off of the roof, got caught with meth and a spoon in his pocket and landed in jail.

29-year-old Jordan J. Schultz was taken into custody at 4:14 a.m. Tuesday after a string of overnight events that included a suicide attempt, arson and damaging a school.

It began with a call from Schultz’s wife at 6:29 p.m. Monday to Winona Lake Police Department stating she believed her husband was suicidal.

At 11:20 p.m., Winona Lake Fire Department, Warsaw-Wayne Fire Department and Pierceton Fire Department responded to a fully-engulfed trailer fire at Fairlane Mobile Home Park. That fire was allegedly set by Schultz, according to Winona Police Department Chief Joe Hawn, who said he used vehicle starting fluid to torch the trailer he shared with his wife.

“It burned the neighbor’s trailer and three or four cars there,” Hawn said. According to the police report, four trailers, four vehicles and a rowboat sustained damage in the fire. The value listed on the report comes to $89,000.

Schultz was taken into custody less than five hours later after Warsaw Police Department officers responded to a report of criminal trespass and mischief at Lakeview Middle School, located in the 800 block of East Smith Street.

According to the incident report, electrical wire and the conduit were damaged to the tune of $1,000.

On his arrest report, his occupation was listed as “dope dealer.”

“When I talked to him, he didn’t seem like it was a suicide attempt,” Hawn said. “He was actually trying to use that wire to be able to get off the roof but it broke and then he fell and hurt himself.”

Hawn said police found methamphetamine and a spoon in Schultz’s pocket.

Schultz was lodged in the Kosciusko County Jail for a charge of arson of a dwelling with a bond of $15,250.
