Two people killed in head-on crash on State Road 23 in Granger identified

We are learning more about a deadly head-on crash on State Road 23.

The collision happened around 12:30 p.m.on Tuesday, July 16, near Chestnut Road when a white Toyota Tacoma, driven by Robert Virgil Frisbie, 70, of Union, Mich., was headed southwest.

Witnesses indicated that the Tacoma was traveling from curb to curb across five lanes, before ultimately crossing the center line and hitting a brown GMC Sierra truck
head-on that was headed northeast.

Frisbie was pronounced deceased at the scene. His female passenger, Rene Eileen Sterling, 60, also of Union, died at the hospital.

Investigators were still working to notify her family, as of late Wednesday afternoon.

An autopsy for Frisbie was scheduled for Wednesday morning.

The driver of the GMC Sierra, a 19-year-old man from Edwardsburg, was taken to the hospital for treatment of broken bones.

A 17-year-old girl in his truck was treated for a broken femur.

The St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team is still investigating the crash. Anybody with information regarding is asked to contact them at 574-259-2966.
