There was a new development Tuesday in the effort to keep Benton Harbor High School from shutting its doors.

School officials have approved a new four-year plan that will be sent to Governor Gretchen Whitmer today for her consideration.

Tuesday’s new plan looks to decrease suspension and expulsion rates wile increasing academic performance, over the next four school years. The embattled district would also continue to work with the Michigan Department of Education through 2023 with the understanding that the state would not be able to threaten another shutdown.

The new plan also lays out a schedule to tackle the district’s $18.4 million debt.
