Owner of Drewry’s property in South Bend responsible for cleaning up asbestos

The owner of the Drewry’s property in South Bend is responsible for cleaning up asbestos and construction debris from the site.

That’s the determination after an inspection of the former brewery site, and a subsequent report from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. The July 1 inspection found asbestos in the debris, and the material was also found at the site in June.

IDEM says the owner has 90 days to remove and properly dispose of the construction and demolition debris that does not contain asbestos.

The owner has been fined more than $60,000 by the city for code violations, and has agreed to clean up the asbestos with a properly-licensed company. His plan has to be approved by the Department before the work can commence.
